Learning Communities at CSUN Student Housing

Student Housing at CSUN currently has several Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Themed Living Communities (TLCs) from which to choose. These college residential programs are designed to help students connect with peers within the same majors or academic and personal interests.

Each community offers its own scheduled events, academic support and social activities. In this highly collaborative structure, residents drive their communities, set priorities, plan activities and identify opportunities to improve academic and personal growth. Research shows that students who participate in the LLCs and TLCs adjust better to college life and are more likely to succeed academically.

Learning Communities allow students to live in a building or a floor dedicated to a major, academic program or a specific theme. In this highly collaborative structure, each community offers its own social activities, events and academic support.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs)

The LLCs allows students from a recognized major, academic program or college on campus to live on the same floor. Currently, Student Housing offers seven LLCs.

  • Cinema Television Arts
  • Engineering and Computer Science
  • First Year Experience
  • Honors
  • Lighthouse
  • Music
  • The Health and Wellness Studies

Themed Living Communities (TLCs)

The TLCs, allows students who unite around a special theme or interest to live on the same floor. Currently, Student Housing offers three TLCs.

  • Cross Cultural

Specialized Housing Options at CSUN

Gender Inclusive Housing

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) exists with the explicit goal of providing a housing experience with a sense of belonging and community for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students, as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning students and allies of those communities. In these assignments, students may room with any other student – regardless of sex, gender, gender identity/expression, or sexual orientation. This community is open to incoming first-year students, transfer students, and returning students. GIH housing is available across all room types and within all Living-Learning Communities (LLC), so rest assured that you can be a part of GIH and any LLC you wish!

Student housing offers gender-neutral housing to all students. Gender Inclusive Housing is designed for LGBTQIA+ students and their allies who do not feel comfortable expressing their identity in a traditional same-gender housing space. If you have questions about gender-inclusive housing, please email Residential Life at

Accessibility Options

Student Housing works closely with the Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) and the National Center on Deafness (NCOD) to support your academic success.

Our buildings are equipped with at least one wheelchair-accessible apartment on the first floor of each building, and a few of our buildings have elevators. Service animals are welcome with verification of medical needs. Academically motivated students will find the apartment-style housing, study space and academic-focused programming supportive of the individual’s needs.

The Lighthouse Living Learning Community is where deaf or hard-of-hearing students can choose to live. The Lighthouse is located in Pacific Willow Hall (building 6). There are light flashers in each room in this community and the resident advisors know American Sign Language (ASL). If you choose not to live in the Lighthouse, there are two equipped rooms in each Student Housing building. Interpreters are available upon request for Student Housing events and meetings.

Each group offers its own events and programs that celebrate, support and advocate for students part of the community they represent.

Academic and Emotional Support at CSUN Student Housing

Tutoring and Counseling

Student Housing offers on-site tutoring (The Spot) and counseling services (Let’s Talk) to ensure that students living in housing can easily access the support they need. Student Housing, in collaboration with our campus partners in academic departments and counseling services, is committed to helping residents find the resources that promote academic success and emotional wellbeing.

Peer Support

Resident Advisors — our trained student leaders — are a first line of contact for our residents and play an important role in fostering a sense of community and creating a fun, safe, and positive living environment for all residents. RAs are tasked with assisting students in their academic success, connecting them with campus resources, and organizing events and activities.

The learning center has multiple study areas, a communal kitchen, and a multi-purpose room (MPR) used for various small and large scale events.

International Students at CSUN Student Housing

Every academic year, international students from all over the world call Student Housing their home while attending CSUN.

Designed with a college student in mind, The Park Apartments and Suites are a short walk from campus and offer supportive, inclusive and safe on-campus living options with a focus on equal parts academics and fun.

Student Housing offers multiple housing options to suit the various members of our diverse student population. International students have access to the same housing options as domestic students.

Things to Keep in Mind for International Students

  • Housing availability: CSUN Student Housing is offered on first-come, first-served bases and does not offer priority or hold spaces for international students. Housing applications may be submitted prior to being officially accepted to CSUN — international students are encouraged to apply the moment they receive the CSUN ID number to secure their housing.
  • Housing application: International students interested in living in Student Housing (including those who need spring housing only) must fill out the standard fall/spring academic year application.
  • Early move-in: International students who are contracted to live on campus and want to move in earlier than the scheduled move-in date will need to contact Student Housing via email at housing@csun.edu. If we can’t accommodate your early move-in request, you will need to secure a hotel room or other housing until move-in day.
  • Move-out: At the end of the academic year, all students living in The Park Apartments and Suites must vacate Student Housing by the move-out date stated in the license agreement. Student Housing will not be able to accommodate any extension requests, so please plan your departure date accordingly.

CSUN MataCard: Your Digital Key to Student Housing

Activate Your CSUN MataCard

All residents must activate and add the MataCard to the Apple or Google wallet on your mobile device before moving-in to Student Housing. Not having a MataCard can delay access to your living space. Please note, MataCard can take up to 7 days to activate.

Your CSUN MataCard will serve as a digital key that will let you access to the Student Housing facilities, including:

  • Your assigned building
  • Your living space
  • Pool areas
  • Community Center
  • Learning Centers
  • After hours gates

The MataCard Is Your Secure Digital CSUN ID Card

The MataCard — your digital CSUN ID — is accessible via your iPhone, Apple Watch or Android phone. More than just an ID, it’s your passport to a world of services and privileges on campus.

As a CSUN student, you can show your CSUN ID when you want to:

  • Conduct official university business.
  • Check in at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) and the Oasis Wellness Center.
  • Visit the Klotz Student Health Center.
  • Check out books or reserve services at the University Library.
  • Get free or discounted tickets for CSUN sporting and stage events.
  • Vote in Associated Students (AS) elections.
  • Enjoy discounts from nearby merchants and restaurants.

If you’re living in Student Housing, your MataCard is your key — it lets you access your living space and Student Housing facilities.

If you have a meal plan, you’ll use your MataCard for meal swipes at G’mo’s and Bamboo Terrace.

You can also add money to your account and use your MataCard like a debit card at the Campus Store, eateries, Mercado locations or when using beverage vending machines. Some campus vendors even offer a 5% discount when you pay with your MataCard!

And, just like a physical student ID, the MataCard verifies your student or employee status for discounts from nearby merchants and restaurants.

How to Add Your MataCard to Your Mobile Device

New CSUN Students

  • If you’re a new CSUN student, log in to the CSUN Portal with your CSUN user ID and password. Under Top Tools, select Student Center.
  • On the Student Center page, under Finances, select Pay Photo Processing Fee to pay the $5 fee.
  • Check your CSUN email account for an invitation to upload a photo and another form of identification. The email should arrive within two business days.
  • Once your photo is approved, you’ll receive an email prompting you to download the Transact eAccounts app and authenticate your digital MataCard.

Current Students

If you have a physical CSUN ID card and are considered an active student, you already have a photo on file and you’re ready to go. If you’d like to upgrade to the MataCard, download the Transact eAccounts app in the App Store or Google Play and log in using your CSUN user ID and password to authenticate your MataCard

Gender Inclusive Housing allows for students to live with roommates and suitemates regardless of gender identity. This includes but is not limited to man, woman, trans, nonbinary and genderqueer/gender non-conforming.

CSUN Student Housing recognizes that same-sex room assignments are not ideal or appropriate for all students. Gender Inclusive Housing seeks to provide an environment that is welcoming to all gender identities and is not limited to the binary (male and female).

Any student who is eligible to live on campus is eligible to live in Gender Inclusive Housing.

The only requirement to apply for housing is a username and password log-in, sent via email by the Office of the Registrar to students who have applied to CSUN. If you have not received your username and password credentials, please contact the Office of the Registrar at (818) 677-3700.

Students can check their waiting list number when they log into the Student Housing Portal. Waiting list numbers may stay the same for a while and then suddenly drop; it all depends on the number of cancellations we receive throughout the summer and fall. When you are offered a space, you will be notified via email (our primary method of communication) and a text message. After notification, you have 3-5 days to log into the Student Housing Portal and complete the application, license agreement and payment to accept the space before it is offered to another student on the waiting list.
